about us

We believe that the best practice comes from the best research, and the primary goal of publicprofiler is to link world class spatial science research to cutting edge public sector applications.

University College London hosts one of the world’s leading clusters of spatial scientists with research interests across a range of application areas and sectors.

What makes us different?

We are backed by world class research that has appeared in the peer reviewed literature. We believe this is of fundamental importance in ensuring that our methods are robust, and are safe to use.

This is crucial for public sector decision making. “Black Box” solutions are not acceptable where stakeholder involvement is key. We provide a refreshingly open learning and business model.

The PublicProfiler management team

The core team working on PublicProfiler activities are as follows:

Paul LongleyProfessor Paul Longley has been Professor of Geographic Information Science at UCL since July 2000. He was previously Professor of Geography at the University of Bristol , and has also worked at the universities of Cardiff , Reading and Karlsruhe . His research interests are grouped around the use of geographical information systems (GIS) and quantitative methods in urban analysis. This includes: information integration within GIS (notably remote sensing – GIS integration); geodemographics; fractal geometry; local taxation; housing and retail market analysis; discrete choice modelling; and social survey research practice. He has held over 30 research grants, totalling c. £2m; supervised 30 Ph.D. students (19 funded by research councils); published ten books; and made over 100 contributions as refereed journal articles and book chapters. Dr Pablo Mateos is a Lecturer in Human Geography at UCL. Pablo’s research interests lie within Population and Urban Geography, and focus on investigating new ontologies of ethnicity, migration and mobility in today’s rapidly changing cities and societies. His work is based in developing innovative and multidisciplinary methods to analyse the spatial forms and social processes that harbour socioeconomic inequalities at neighbourhood level, with a view to informing public policy. The regional foci of his research are UK, Spain, and Mexico-US, where he is working in collaboration with leading academics as well as public sector institutions. Contact Pablo: [Link]
Dr Alex Singleton is a Research Fellow at UCL. He has a background in Knowledge Transfer and has previously worked across a variety of sectors. His research interests centre on the practical application of Quantative Geography. His research into geodemographic profiling tools and techniques has been used to enable UK Higher Education institutions to better target and engage with under-represented groups. Alex’s recently completed Ph.D. explored the geodemographic analysis of access inequality in Higher Education, including the modelling of neighbourhood participation rates, prior performance and progression. His research has involved collaboration with numerous data partners including UCAS, the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
